Back To Pearl Harbor 1941--INDEX

Work on Ewa Field by Marines began on 21 Jan, 1941
after the arrival of the 2nd Marine Aircraft Group, VMJ-2,
Fleet Marine Force, from San Diego, on board the
USS Enterprise and USS Lexington.

Their C.O. was Lt. Col. Lewie Merritt.

Living conditions were very basic, with large tents serving

as living quarters and mess halls. The dry coral dust was a constant problem, getting into everything. The only immediate way to

control it was by spraying oil on the ground.

But, the Marines soon turned to other "xeroscaping" ideas and

introduced Southwest desert plants to hold the soil. Many of

these usual desert plants can still be found today around the airfield.

NAS Pearl Harbor announced 28 Jan, 1941:
"Landing Mat Ewa Mooring Mast Field Completed
and available for use. Ewa Field is available for
Carrier Landing Practice daily from 1330 to 1500."
