Hard for some to believe today that Ewa Field predated Barbers Point Naval Air Station by 16 years as a result of growing out of an experimental Navy Airship Project. Even more surprising too, perhaps, is that as a WW-II military base, Ewa Field Marine Corps Air Station was actually a LARGER BASE than BPNAS! |
The original field was called Navy Mooring Mast Field because the Navy had originally planned to have the U.S.S. Akron based there when in Hawaii. But the Akron crashed, ending the project. |
Planes could fly up and "hook on" to the Akron and be hoisted inside! The actual mast for the Akron was built at the Ewa Field and remained for many years, until it was made a Marine Air Field in 1940. The field was just becoming operational when it was attacked on December 7, 1941. |
